Biography
Liu Han Wen was born in Taipei in 1965. He studied at Fu-Hsin Trade and Arts School and took his degree in fine arts at Chinese Culture University, later studying at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Madrid. From 1987 he worked as a department-store window designer, then as an art designer at CommonWealth Magazine, and through the 1990s as an illustrator for the literary supplements of Taiwan’s major newspapers. He founded Han Wen Design Studio in 1995 and turned to painting full time in 1998.
That design background shows in the work: the sensibility of a painter with the structure of a designer. He works mainly in acrylic and mixed media, bringing metallic paints and powdered materials from the building trade into the picture so that colour builds in washes and layers — materials that also hold up better in a humid climate.
He paints what he has seen and touched himself: lions, tigers and leopards, cats, and the streets and stations he has walked through. In 2021 he showed a series of Gundam robots. His 2026 solo exhibition, Everyday Glow, is at Capital Art Center, Taipei.
